Introduction:

Welcome to our lesson on Proper Nouns! Can anybody tell me what they think a proper noun is? (Wait for answers) A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing. Today we will be discussing how to identify a proper noun by looking at examples and learning how to edit our writing to add proper nouns in certain situations.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce the concept of proper nouns
  2. Provide examples of proper nouns
  3. Teach students how to edit their writing to add proper nouns
  4. Provide writing practice with proper nouns
  5. Conduct an assessment

Questioning:

Throughout the lesson ask the class questions to engage them in the topic. Ask questions like:

• What are the three types of proper nouns? • How can we edit our writing to include proper nouns? • Can you think of any examples of proper nouns?

Assessment:

To assess the student’s understanding ask the student to read a passage aloud and identify all the Proper Nouns they can find. Require the students to explain why each Proper Noun is applicable. Put them into groups and have them create a list of Proper Nouns they can remember.

Differentiation:

Provide options for different levels of literacy. For students who are struggling with identifying proper nouns, provide visual clues like pictures or videos to help them identify the answer. For more advanced students, provide extra practice by giving them different passages to find proper nouns in.

Plenary:

To review proper nouns, go over the list that the students have made in their groups. Ask the students to practice writing sentences a proper noun into their sentence and have the class try to guess which one it is. Also have the students think of a funny or unusual proper noun to write down.
