Lesson Outline 1. Define proper nouns- Explain that proper nouns are the names of specific people, places and things (e.g. Mary, Canberra, Big Ben).

Introduce common and proper nouns- Explain that proper nouns are always spelt with a capital letter, but common nouns are not (e.g. dog - Common Noun and Rover- Proper Noun).

Group brainstorm- Ask students to come up with a list of proper nouns and add them to a class chart.

Activity- Give students a worksheet (Worksheet resource: https://www.twinkl.com.au/resource/au-t-l-54011-proper-and-common-nouns-sorting-activity) to identify the proper nouns in a sentence.

Plenary- Ask students to name three different proper nouns they know.
Questioning Ensure to ask students questions throughout the lesson to check their understanding, e.g. “What is a proper noun?” “What is the difference between a proper noun and a common noun?”
Assessment Assess students’ understanding of proper nouns by asking them to use some in sentences of their own.
Differentiation Provide students with more challenging questions, such as asking them to identify the proper nouns in a more complex sentence.
Plenary Review the lesson by asking students to name three different proper nouns they know.
