Introduction
Welcome the children to the lesson and explain what you will be learning about today. Introduce the term ‘Noun’ and explain that today’s lesson will focus on Proper Nouns. Explain a Proper Noun is a person, place or thing that has been given its own special name (e.g. Hannah, Dublin, iPhone).
Lesson Outline
- Ask the children whether they can name any Proper Nouns.
- Introduce the concept of Proper Nouns using fun videos and examples (see videos and worksheet link below).
- Introduce any exceptions to Proper Nouns rules (e.g. the Park, the Lake).
- Have the children brainstorm together to come up with some examples of Proper Nouns.
- Show the children a selection of some games and activities on worksheets to help them practise (see worksheet link below).
- Allow the children to complete the worksheets and support as needed.
Questioning
- Ask the children to explain what a Proper Noun is.
- Have the children share some of the Proper Nouns that they came up with.
- Ask the children to explain any exceptions they may have noticed.
Assessment
- Monitor the children’s work on the worksheets.
- Check the children’s understanding of the concepts and concepts being discussed.
Differentiation
- Provide advanced worksheets and activities for those children who need more of a challenge.
- Offer extra support to those children who may need it.
Plenary
Summarise the main points of the lesson and reinforce the importance of Proper Nouns.
