Introduction: Greet the students and introduce the lesson for today – “Today we are going to learn about proper nouns – the names of people, places and things, and how we write them differently from other words.

Lesson Outline: • Explain the definition of a proper noun • Give examples of proper nouns • Show how to capitalise proper nouns • Introduce the concept of collective nouns • Explain how to capitalise titles • Practice writing and identifying proper nouns

Questions: • What is a proper noun? (Answer: A proper noun is a name of a person, place, thing or idea and it always begins with a capital letter) • Can you give an example of a proper noun? (Answer: For example, Mark, New York, Table, and Friday) • What are collective nouns? (Answer: Collective nouns are names used to describe a group of people, animals, or things and can be singular or plural, e.g., team, herd, flock, family) • How do you capitalise titles? (Answer: Titles are usually capitalised, e.g., President Obama, Doctor Brown)

Assessment: The student’s understanding of the lesson can be assessed through • An oral or written quiz • A written task • An interactive game

Differentiation: • Raising the challenge: Allow more advanced students to create original sentences incorporating what they have learned • Lowering the challenge: Offer sentence starters to help struggling students

Plenary: Take a few minutes to go over what they learnt and ask the students to define a proper noun again. Talk about how they are used in their daily lives.
