Introduction:

Before we begin learning about proper nouns, let’s first review simple nouns. In English, nouns refer to people, places, things, and ideas. Nouns can be general and used to refer to many things such as ‘dog’ or ‘chair’. Nouns can also be more specific, such as proper nouns.

Today, we’re going to learn more about proper nouns and how to identify them.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Defining and identifying proper nouns
  2. Differences between proper and common nouns
  3. Capitalizing proper nouns
  4. Examples of proper nouns

Questioning:

  1. What are proper nouns?
  2. What type of nouns can be made into a proper noun?
  3. Are there any rules for capitalizing proper nouns?
  4. What examples of proper nouns can you think of?

Assessment:

Assess student’s understanding of proper nouns and ability to identify them.

  1. Ask students to name 3 common nouns and 3 proper nouns
  2. Ask students to create sentences using 3 proper nouns
  3. Ask students to write a paragraph using multiple proper nouns

Differentiation:

Provide sentence starters for students who struggle with writing, or have them look at a picture and create sentences using a proper noun to describe it.

Plenary:

Summarize what we learned about proper nouns today and ask students to answer one of the questioning prompts from the lesson.
