Introduction (5 minutes):

Explain to the students a proper noun is a special kind of noun that is used to talk about people, places, and things. Ask the students if they can think of any proper nouns. Show the students different examples on the board (e.g. Michael, London, and Apple).

Lesson Outline (20 minutes):

Explain to the students that proper nouns always begin with a capital letter. Show examples on the board of word that begin with capital letters (e.g. John and Tokyo) and words that begin with lowercase letters (e.g. girl and city).

Read aloud examples of sentences with proper nouns and have the students identify which words in the sentence are proper nouns.

Watch the following video and discuss with the students:

Introduce some proper noun worksheets to the students:

Have the students work on the worksheets individually or in pairs.

Questioning (10 minutes):

Encourage the students to ask questions throughout the lesson. Try to involve all students by asking every student a question.

Assessment (5 minutes):

Give the students a list of words and have them identify which words are proper nouns and which are not.

Differentiation (5 minutes):

Provide additional resources to students who need more help with understanding proper nouns (e.g. reading materials or worksheets with easier questions).

Plenary (5 minutes):

Have students share what they learned today about proper nouns and discuss some of the activities they did.
