Introduction:

Introduce the concept of Proper Nouns to the students by engaging them in an introductory activity. Ask each student to stand up and say their name. Explain to students that their name is a unique name that nobody else has and that it is considered a Proper Noun. Ask them why it is called a Proper Noun and explain that it is because the noun is “proper,” meaning it is specific and exact.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce Proper Nouns
  2. Explain the components of a proper noun
  3. Identify which words in a sentence are proper nouns
  4. Create sentences using proper nouns
  5. Take quiz on proper nouns

Questioning:

Prompt students to ask questions and provide them with opportunities to think deeply about the concept. Sample questions could include:

  1. What is a proper noun?
  2. How can you determine if a word is a proper noun?
  3. What are some examples of proper nouns?
  4. How can you use proper nouns in a sentence?

Assessment:

Assess student’s understanding of proper nouns with a quiz at the end of the lesson. Ask students multiple choice or true/false questions to evaluate their understanding.

Differentiation:

Differentiate instruction based on the individual needs of students. If a student is struggling, provide extra support and activities to help them understand the concept. Encourage advanced learners by providing an additional challenge in the form of a creative project.

Plenary:

Review what was learned throughout the lesson by asking a few review questions. Refer back to the questions asked throughout the lesson, and ask students to provide examples of proper nouns to demonstrate their understanding.
