Introduction (2-3 minutes):

Start by showing a short video to the class such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKcw1qxq3cc When the video is finished, review some of the major concepts such as capitalization and what makes a word a proper noun.

Lesson Outline (5-10 minutes):

  1. Begin by providing an overview of the rules for proper nouns.

  2. Explain that proper nouns are nouns that name a specific person, place, or thing.

  3. Give examples of proper nouns (e.g. Susan, Canada, the White House).

  4. Ask the students to list some proper nouns and write them on the board.

  5. Provide further examples and ask the students to identify whether they are proper nouns or not.

  6. Ask the students to provide examples of proper nouns in sentences.

  7. Ask the students to look for proper nouns in a short passage.

Questioning (2-3 minutes):

  1. Ask the students to identify some examples of proper nouns.

  2. Ask the students why it is important to capitalize proper nouns.

  3. Ask the students to provide examples of proper nouns in sentences.

Assessment (2-3 minutes):

The students can be assessed on their understanding of proper nouns by having them complete a worksheet such as this one: https://www.worksheetfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Proper-Nouns-Worksheet-2.pdf

Differentiation (2-3 minutes):

The lesson can be differentiated for students who are struggling or need more support. This can include providing worksheets with fewer words or providing the students with the answers to the questions.

Plenary (2-3 minutes):

At the end of the lesson, review the main concepts with the class. Ask the students to provide an example of a proper noun and to explain why it is important to capitalize them.
