Introduction: Hello, everyone! Today we’re going to be talking about an important part of our English language: proper nouns. Proper nouns are the names we give something to make it special. Do you know what kinds of things we give names to? (Wait for answers) That’s right! We name people, places, things, authors, books, TV shows, and more. Let’s spend some time today getting to know proper nouns better.

Lesson Outline: 1. What is a proper noun? Have a class discussion, using examples of people, places, and things. 2. Introduce the concept of a proper noun brain storm on the whiteboard. 3. Watch a short video introducing proper nouns (1 mins, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXyQLpqtJek ). 4. Introduce some worksheets for the children to work on (15 mins, e.g. https://www.k12reader.com/worksheet/identifying-proper-nouns/). 5. Recap proper nouns and use a few sentence examples to help explain the concept.

Questioning: Throughout the lesson, ensure that you ask the students questions to ensure understanding and engagement. Try asking them questions such as the following:

• What is a proper noun? • Can you name some people, places, and things? • What is the difference between a common noun and a proper noun? • What proper nouns were included in the worksheets?

Assessment: At the end of the lesson, encourage students to form small groups to complete a quick review game. Ask each group to pick a random proper noun and come up with a clue (e.g. an author / JK Rowling). The other groups should then guess the proper noun.

Differentiation: As some students may be more confident in this topic than others, provide a range of activities and worksheets adapted to different levels of ability. This can help to ensure that the students are challenged and engaged in the lesson.

Plenary: To end the lesson, review the key points from the lesson, encouraging the students to give their own examples of proper nouns. Ask the students to come up with their own ideas for stories and pictures, incorporating the proper nouns that we have discussed today.
