Introduction

Start the lesson by introducing the concept of proper nouns to the class. Explain that proper nouns are the names of specific people, places and things.

Provide some examples of proper nouns and ask the children to identify them. For example, Mike Tyson, London Bridge, Coca-Cola.

Lesson Outline

Explain the importance of proper nouns, such as they are often used to label or identify something specific and they are always written with capital letters.

Show a short video on proper nouns to the children. Here is an appropriate video to use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXfV6jKzSIs&

Show the children a worksheet and ask them to identify the nouns which are not proper nouns (e.g. desk, dog, girl, Paris). The children should then circle the proper nouns.

Questioning

Throughout the lesson use probing questions to get the children to recall key facts about what proper nouns are and to elicit examples.

Assessment

At the end of the lesson, assess the children’s understanding of proper nouns. You could ask them to provide you with three examples of proper nouns.

Alternatively, they can complete a worksheet or quiz on their understanding of proper nouns.

Differentiation

Provide group activities and worksheets at different levels to challenge the students effectively and differentiate the lesson. You could also provide tasks where children have to identify the correct proper noun given a selection of words.

Plenary

Recap with the children what they have learned in the lesson. Ask the class which sorts of things are proper nouns. Ask the children again to list some examples of proper nouns.
