Lesson Plan: Plants Need Light

Grade Level: Primary 1 (ages 5-6)

Subject: Science

Duration: 45 minutes

Learning Objectives: 1. Understand that plants need light to grow and survive. 2. Identify the different sources of light for plants. 3. Explain the process of photosynthesis in simple terms.

Materials: - Picture cards of different plants - Picture cards of different light sources (sun, lamp, candle, flashlight) - Large poster paper - Markers - Video resources (links provided below) - Worksheet resources (links provided below)

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by showing the picture cards of different plants to the students. 2. Ask the students if they know what plants need to grow and survive. 3. Engage the students in a brief discussion about the importance of water and soil for plants. 4. Introduce the concept that plants also need something else to grow - light!

Lesson Outline: 1. Display the picture cards of different light sources (sun, lamp, candle, flashlight) and ask the students to identify each source of light. (5 minutes) 2. Explain to the students that the sun is the main source of light for plants. Discuss how plants use sunlight to make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. (10 minutes) 3. Show a video resource on photosynthesis to help the students visualize the process. (Video resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnQe0xW_JY4) (5 minutes) 4. Conduct a questioning session to assess the students’ understanding. Ask questions such as: - Why do plants need light? - What is the main source of light for plants? - How do plants use sunlight to make food? (10 minutes) 5. Distribute worksheet resources to the students. Instruct them to color the pictures of plants that need light to grow. (Worksheet resource: [insert link to worksheet resource]) (5 minutes) 6. Provide differentiated instruction based on the students’ abilities. For students who need additional support, provide extra guidance and simplified explanations. For students who grasp the concept quickly, encourage them to explain the process of photosynthesis in their own words. (5 minutes)

Assessment: 1. Observe the students’ participation and engagement during the questioning session. 2. Review the completed worksheets to assess the students’ understanding of the concept.

Differentiation: 1. For students with reading difficulties, provide visual aids and simplified explanations. 2. For students with advanced abilities, encourage them to explore additional resources on photosynthesis and present their findings to the class.

Plenary (5 minutes): 1. Recap the main points of the lesson: plants need light to grow and survive, the sun is the main source of light for plants, and plants use sunlight to make their own food through photosynthesis. 2. Ask the students to share one thing they learned about plants needing light.
