Lesson Plan: Mary the Mother of Jesus

Grade Level: Primary 1 (ages 5-6) Subject: Religious Education

Objective: - Students will learn about Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and understand her significance in Christianity. - Students will explore different ways believers have honored Mary, including family rosary, processions, grottoes/shrines, iconography, art, litanies, songs/hymns. - Students will identify similarities and differences in the ways believers honor Mary.

Materials: - Picture books about Mary and Jesus - Images of Mary and Jesus in different forms of art - Audio recordings of Marian hymns/songs - Paper and coloring materials - Chart paper and markers

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by asking students if they know who Mary is. Allow them to share their thoughts.
    • Explain that Mary is an important figure in Christianity as she was the mother of Jesus.
    • Show a picture of Mary and Jesus and ask students to describe what they see.
    • Ask students if they have seen any pictures or statues of Mary in their church or at home.
  2. Storytelling (10 minutes):
    • Read a picture book about Mary and Jesus, such as “Mary’s Story” by Patricia Pingry or “Mary, Mother of Jesus” by Tomie dePaola.
    • Pause during the reading to ask questions and encourage discussion about Mary’s role as Jesus’ mother.
  3. Exploring Different Ways of Honoring Mary (15 minutes):
    • Show images of Mary in different forms of art, such as paintings, sculptures, and icons.
    • Discuss with students how believers honor Mary in different ways, such as through family rosary, processions, grottoes/shrines, iconography, art, litanies, songs/hymns.
    • Play audio recordings of Marian hymns/songs and encourage students to listen and reflect on the music.
    • Show pictures of grottoes/shrines dedicated to Mary and explain their significance.
  4. Activity: Art and Coloring (15 minutes):
    • Distribute paper and coloring materials to each student.
    • Ask students to draw or color a picture of Mary and Jesus, using their imagination or referring to the images shown earlier.
    • Encourage students to be creative and express their understanding of Mary’s role.
  5. Group Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Gather students in a circle and ask them to share their artwork.
    • Discuss the similarities and differences in their drawings, emphasizing that there are different ways to represent Mary.
    • Write down the different ways believers honor Mary on chart paper, highlighting the similarities and differences.
  6. Conclusion (5 minutes):
    • Recap the lesson by asking students to share one thing they learned about Mary and how believers honor her.
    • Emphasize that Mary is respected and honored by Christians in various ways, but the most important thing is to show love and respect for her as Jesus’ mother.
    • End the lesson with a short prayer thanking Mary for her role in Jesus’ life.

Extension Activity: - Encourage students to create a simple song or chant honoring Mary, using their own words or adapting existing Marian hymns. - Invite students to share their songs/chants with the class in the next lesson.
