Lesson Plan: Author’s Purpose

Grade Level: Primary 2nd (7-8 years old)

Subject: English Language Arts

Duration: 45 minutes

Objective: Students will be able to identify and understand the three main purposes of an author: to inform, to entertain, and to persuade.

Introduction: 1. Greet the students and explain that today they will be learning about the author’s purpose. 2. Show the students a book and ask them why they think authors write books. Write their responses on the whiteboard or chart paper.

Lesson Outline: 1. Explain that authors write for different reasons, and these reasons are called the author’s purpose. 2. Introduce the three main purposes of an author: to inform, to entertain, and to persuade. 3. Show the video “Author’s Purpose” by Study.com to provide a visual explanation of the concept (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v6vqf0j0z4). 4. Discuss the video and ask students if they have any questions or need further clarification. 5. Use the video “Author’s Purpose Song” by Have Fun Teaching to engage students and reinforce the concept (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v6vqf0j0z4). 6. Display the three purposes (to inform, to entertain, and to persuade) on the whiteboard or chart paper. 7. Provide examples of each purpose and ask students to identify which purpose the examples serve. 8. Engage students in a class discussion by asking questions such as: - Why do authors write books? - How can we tell if an author’s purpose is to inform, entertain, or persuade? - Can a book have more than one purpose? - Can you think of any examples of books that inform, entertain, or persuade? 9. Distribute the “Author’s Purpose Worksheet” by Education.com (https://www.education.com/download/worksheet/105827/authors-purpose.pdf) and allow students to complete it individually or in pairs. 10. For differentiation, provide additional support to struggling students by working with them in a small group or providing simpler examples. 11. For assessment, review the completed worksheets to check for understanding and provide feedback.

Plenary: 1. Recap the main points of the lesson by asking students to share what they have learned about the author’s purpose. 2. Discuss how understanding the author’s purpose can help us as readers. 3. Encourage students to think critically about the purpose of books they read in the future. 4. Conclude the lesson by playing the “Author’s Purpose Song” again and having the students sing along.
