Lesson Plan: Cambridge 1.1 Setting the Scene

Objective: - To introduce primary 3 children to the concept of setting in a story - To help students understand the importance of setting in a story - To enable students to identify and describe different settings in stories

Success Criteria: - Students will be able to identify and describe the setting of a story - Students will be able to explain the importance of setting in a story

Warm-up (5 minutes): - Show a short video clip of a familiar story (e.g., Little Red Riding Hood) and ask students to describe the setting they see in the video. - Discuss their answers as a class and explain that the setting is where and when a story takes place.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Begin by asking students if they know what a setting is in a story. - Explain that the setting is where and when a story takes place. - Show a few pictures of different settings (e.g., a beach, a forest, a city) and ask students to describe what they see.

  2. Discussion and Questioning (10 minutes): - Engage students in a discussion about the importance of setting in a story. - Ask questions such as: - How does the setting help us understand the story better? - Can you think of a story where the setting is very important? Why? - How would the story change if the setting was different?

  3. Activity - Identifying Settings (15 minutes): - Distribute a worksheet with different story scenarios to each student. - In pairs or small groups, students will read the scenarios and identify the setting of each story. - Encourage students to discuss their answers and provide reasons for their choices.

  4. Video Resource (10 minutes): - Show a short video clip of a story with a clear and distinct setting. - Pause the video at different points and ask students to describe the setting they see. - Discuss their answers as a class and ask follow-up questions to deepen their understanding.

  5. Assessment (10 minutes): - Provide each student with a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw a picture of their favorite story setting. - Instruct students to label their drawing and write a short sentence explaining why they like that setting. - Collect the drawings and sentences for assessment purposes.

Differentiation: - For students who need additional support, provide them with a simplified worksheet or work in pairs with a more advanced student. - For students who need extension, challenge them to write a short paragraph describing the setting of their favorite story instead of a sentence.

Plenary (5 minutes): - Ask a few students to share their favorite story setting and explain why they chose it. - Recap the importance of setting in a story and how it helps us understand the story better.
