Lesson Plan: Common and Proper Nouns

Grade: Primary 3 (8-9 years old)

Learning Objectives: 1. All students will be able to identify and differentiate between common and proper nouns. 2. Most students will be able to use common and proper nouns correctly in sentences. 3. Some students will be able to identify and categorize common and proper nouns in a given text.

Starter Introduction: 1. Show a picture of a classroom and ask students to identify objects in the picture. 2. Write down their responses on the board. 3. Discuss the words written on the board and ask students if they notice anything special about them.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce the concept of common and proper nouns:
    • Explain that nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals.
    • Define common nouns as words that refer to general people, places, things, or animals.
    • Define proper nouns as words that refer to specific people, places, things, or animals and always begin with a capital letter.
  2. Provide examples and non-examples:
    • Show examples of common nouns (e.g., dog, city, book) and proper nouns (e.g., Rover, London, Harry Potter).
    • Show non-examples of common nouns (e.g., names of people, places, or things) and proper nouns (e.g., common nouns starting with a lowercase letter).
  3. Differentiated Activity 1: Common and Proper Noun Sort
    • Provide a worksheet with a list of words and ask students to sort them into common and proper nouns.
    • For struggling students, provide a word bank with the words already categorized.
    • For advanced students, include some challenging words that may require research or critical thinking.
  4. Differentiated Activity 2: Sentence Writing
    • Ask students to write five sentences using common and proper nouns correctly.
    • For struggling students, provide sentence starters or a word bank to choose from.
    • For advanced students, encourage them to use descriptive language and include more than one common or proper noun in each sentence.
  5. Differentiated Activity 3: Identifying Nouns in a Text
    • Provide a short passage or story and ask students to identify and underline the common and proper nouns.
    • For struggling students, provide a word bank with the common and proper nouns used in the text.
    • For advanced students, ask them to categorize the common and proper nouns into separate lists.

Assessment: - During the activities, observe students’ participation and understanding. - Review their completed worksheets and sentences to assess their ability to identify and use common and proper nouns correctly.

Plenary: - Recap the lesson by asking students to share one common noun and one proper noun they learned today. - Discuss the importance of using proper nouns correctly in writing and communication.
