Introduction
Good morning children. Today, we are going to be learning about three types of words - nouns, adjectives and verbs. A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. An adjective is a word that can describe a noun. A verb is a word that expresses an action, event or state of being.
Lesson Outline
- This morning, we will first be talking about nouns. I’ll be giving examples of nouns, and I’d like you all to repeat after me.
Nouns: dog, cat, girl, ocean, table
- Then, we’ll talk about adjectives. An adjective can be used to describe a noun. I’ll give examples of adjectives and I’d like you all to repeat after me.
Adjectives: fluffy, blue, slow, round, shiny
- Lastly, we will talk about verbs. Verbs are words that express an action, event or state of being. I’ll give examples of verbs and I’d like you all to repeat after me.
Verbs: run, jump, swim, cry, sleep
Questions
I’m now going to ask you some questions about the three types of words we’ve talked about.
-
What is a noun? A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
-
Can you name one thing that is an adjective? A fluffy pillow.
-
What is an example of a verb? Run.
Assessment
Let’s play a game to review what we have learned about nouns, adjectives and verbs today. I’m going to say a sentence, and I’d like you to identify the noun, the adjective and the verb it contains.
Example: She jumped over the tall fence. Noun: fence; Adjective: tall; Verb: jumped
Differentiation
For children that find the game too easy, I can challenge them by giving more difficult sentences. For example: She carefully placed the blue cup on the table.
Plenary
For the plenary, I will ask each of the children to come up with a sentence containing a noun, an adjective, and a verb of their own. They will then have to share their sentence with the class, and explain which word is the noun, which is the adjective, and which is the verb.
