Introduction:

Welcome the children to the lesson. Explain to them that today’s lesson will be about proper nouns. Tell the children that proper nouns are the names that we give to people, places, and things. Ask the students to share some examples of proper nouns.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce and Define Proper Nouns:

Explain that proper nouns are words used to name specific people, places, and things. Examples include names of cities, countries, people, sports teams, and so on.

  1. Tell Stories to Analyze Proper Nouns:

Tell a story to the children and stop at various points for them to identify the proper nouns that were used. Ask them questions like, “What is the name of the city in the story? What are the names of the people in the story?”

  1. Conduct an Art Activity:

Split the class into groups and give each group a piece of paper, a pencil, and markers. Ask each group to draw a picture of the story, labeling each proper noun.

  1. Watch a Video and Answer Questions:

Show the class the video, What Is a Proper Noun? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgfJPBNxQJQ). After watching the video, ask the students to identify the proper nouns used in the video and answer some basic questions.

  1. Utilize Worksheets:

Provide the students with worksheets that they can use to practice identifying proper nouns. Here are some resources available:

• Proper Nouns Worksheet 1 (https://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/pdf/proper_nouns.pdf )

• Proper Nouns Worksheet 2 (https://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/grammar/grade-3-proper-nouns-1.pdf )

Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, ask the children to identify the proper nouns from the story and video. Also, assess each group’s artwork for proper nouns as well as their worksheet activities.

Differentiation:

For students who struggle with identifying proper nouns, provide extra worksheets and activities that might help them understand the concept better. Also, introduce other resources such as audio-visual materials or games to help those students understand.

Plenary:

In the end, ask some questions and encourage the students to answer them. For example, “What are some proper nouns we use?”, “Can you give me an example of a proper noun?”. This will help reinforce their learning.
