Introduction:

Start off by introducing yourself and asking the class to introduce themselves. Describe the topic of the day - proper nouns. Ask the students to first take a few moments to think about what proper nouns are, and how they act differently from other types of words (challenge them to form a sentence using one).

Lesson Outline:

Explain to the students, in easy to understand terms, what proper nouns are and how they should be formatted (capitalized). Using pictures and visual examples, explain to the students how proper nouns are the names of people, places, and things.

Using the board or projector, provide different examples of proper nouns, and ask the class to name similar proper nouns of their own, and provide their own examples.

Explore the use of proper nouns within a full sentence, as well as within dialogue, and explain why they are so important to use.

Questioning:

Continue to ask the class open-ended and thought-provoking questions about proper nouns - for example:

• What do you think is the purpose of proper nouns?

• How can proper nouns make your sentences clearer and more understandable?

• Name 3 specific examples of characters in a book that would use proper nouns.

Assessment:

While not necessarily a form of assessment, continually ask the students to provide sentence examples using a proper nouns that they have just discovered.

Encourage students to ask and answer questions without raising their hands, as a form of collaboration and communication.

Additionally, using the links provided below, provide worksheets and other formative assessments to the students, to help them learn and understand the concept at hand.

Differentiation:

Provide different activities to differentiate for each student - For example, mix and match activity, writing stories activity, coloring activity.

Allow for one-to-one sessions if possible, to help the students truly grasp the concept.

Provide the students with materials (such as the worksheets provided in the link below) that can be used for independent study, if needed.

Plenary:

Gather the students together and ask them to provide examples of proper nouns from their own examples given in the lesson.

Summarize what has been learned in the lesson, emphasizing how important proper nouns are, and how they can be used in everyday life.

Reinforce the idea that proper nouns are names of people, places and things - and that they are always capitalized (except when referring to the proper noun in a question).
