Introduction

In this lesson, students will learn about proper nouns and how to identify and use them correctly in their writing. Prior knowledge of nouns is assumed.

Lesson Outline

  1. To review what the students already know, the students will be asked to share what they know about nouns.

  2. Explain what a proper noun is and how it is different from a common noun (a proper noun is the name given to a person, place, thing or idea e.g. London, Kevin; a common noun is a generic word for a person, place, thing or idea e.g. city, boy).

  3. Introduce the concept of capital letters: all proper nouns should begin with a capital letter.

  4. Introduce basic rules of capitalisation: in addition to the beginning of proper nouns, capital letters should also be used at the beginning of sentences, school names and months of the year.

  5. Provide written examples of proper nouns and accompanying capital letters.

  6. Show a video resource on proper nouns to reinforce the concept. (Resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKZZstgI9N8).

  7. Explain the Grammar and Punctuation quiz at the end of the video.

  8. Give the students a worksheet activity on proper nouns. (Resource: http://www.learningzonexpress.com/images/storybook/14892_lg_r.pdf).

Questioning

Throughout the lesson, the teacher should ask the students questions to elicit their prior knowledge, summarise the main points and check for understanding.

Assessment

The students should be assessed on the accuracy of their answers to the worksheet activity and encouraged to participate in the quiz at the end of the video.

Differentiation

More able students may be challenged with some more advanced examples of proper nouns, such as geographical features, buildings, and titles.

Other students may require support from the teacher to understand some of the concepts.

Plenary

At the end of the lesson, teacher should summarise the main points and ask the students to share any questions or points for discussion.
