Introduction
Welcome to today’s class. We’re here to learn about something called proper nouns. Let’s start by looking at ourselves. Where do you live? What’s your name? These are examples of proper nouns, and in this lesson we’re going to learn lots more about them.
Lesson Outline
-
What are proper nouns? - Show the children a helpful video about proper nouns, such as this short one from Education.com (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSb-UwmvD8Q). Ask the class if they can identify four examples of proper nouns.
-
Writing proper nouns - Give each child a worksheet featuring both proper nouns and common nouns such as this with images by Education.com (https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/cursive-tracing-proper-words/) Ask the children to identify the proper nouns and write them in the empty boxes.
-
Different types of proper nouns - Use this worksheet by Education.com (https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/proper-nouns/) to point out the different types of proper nouns – people, places, months/days, titles and products.
Questioning
- What is a proper noun?
- What are examples of proper nouns?
- What types of proper nouns can you remember?

Assessment
The children can demonstrate their understanding of proper nouns by writing them in the empty boxes in the worksheet given.
Differentiation
For more advanced pupils, they can complete the second worksheet by Education.com (https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/editing-capital-letters/) which helps them to practice writing proper nouns and using capital letters.
