Introduction

Begin the lesson by introducing proper nouns. Ask the children a few simple questions such as:

• Do you know the name of your school? • What is your teacher’s name? • What is the name of your city?

Explain that the answers to these questions are all proper nouns (the unique name for a person, place or thing).

Lesson Outline

• Discuss the definition of proper nouns and how they must begin with capitals. • Brainstorm examples of proper nouns. • Watch a video or two about proper nouns (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVJnh_S9-VY and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUCRJ0zv6qI) • Introduce the worksheet activity (eg. http://www.ictgames.com/writingTo20/writingTo20v2.html) • Ask the children to work alone, in pairs or small groups to complete the activity. • Monitor the activity and interact with each group to check understanding.

Questioning

• Ask a few questions to check understanding such as: • What is a proper noun? • What letter do proper nouns always begin with? • Can you give me an example of a proper noun?

Assessment

• Use the worksheet answers to assess the children understanding of proper nouns (e.g. each child can write down a list of the proper nouns they used). • Ask the children to write a sentence with a proper noun to demonstrate their understanding.

Differentiation

• Allow children to work at different speeds and to use different resources (for example, some may work quicker alone while others may need an interactive resource like a video). • Provide more challenging activities for more able children (e.g. create a proper noun list with a partner, come up with sentences using the list).

Plenary

• Ask the children to recap what they have learnt about proper nouns (e.g. what a proper noun is, how it begins). • Ask the children to share their sentences containing proper nouns with the class in order to demonstrate their understanding. • Provide rewards for those who participated and worked well.
