Introduction: Begin the lesson with a game of “Who am I?” Allow each student to write down a proper noun, such as the name of an animal, celebrity, author, place, etc. on a sticky note. Collect all of the notes and post them onto the board. As a class, each student will take turns trying to guess the other student’s proper noun by asking questions that can be answered with a yes or no. With each correct guess, award the student with a point!
Lesson Outline: - Introduce the concept of proper nouns – Explain that proper nouns are the names of people, places, things, and events. - Explain the different types of proper nouns – Teach the students about proper nouns such as people names, place names, holiday names, and organization names. - Demonstrate how to use proper nouns – Provide some examples of proper nouns in sentences and discuss how to spell and capitalize these nouns. - Review use of punctuation with proper nouns – Explain how to punctuate proper nouns when used in a sentence or quotation.
Questioning: Include questioning throughout the lesson to check for student understanding. Possible questions may be: - What is a proper noun? - Can you give me an example of a person’s proper noun? - How do you spell and capitalize proper nouns? - How do you punctuate proper nouns in a sentence?
