Introduction:

Good morning everyone! Today in English class, we will be learning about proper nouns! Proper nouns are the names of people, places, and things - like “John”, “London”, and “Phonics”. We are going to practice writing and identifying different proper nouns today.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Start with an overview of proper nouns (3 minutes) - What are proper nouns? - Give examples of proper nouns
  2. Watch “Proper Nouns Song” (Andre TV) (2 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh_VF8mJT6U
  3. Practice writing examples of proper nouns (10 minutes): - Discuss ways in which proper nouns are written differently from other nouns - Pass out the worksheet attached (Proper Nouns Worksheet.pdf)
  4. Activity: Create a list of proper nouns together (8 minutes) - Create a list of 15 proper nouns - Make a list of proper nouns and have the students brainstorm
  5. Quiz time! (5 minutes) - Choose 5 out of the list and have the students identify them as proper nouns

Questioning:

  1. What is a proper noun?
  2. What are some examples of proper nouns?
  3. Why are proper nouns written differently than other nouns?
  4. Can you name 5 proper nouns?

Assessment:

Throughout the lesson the students will be assessed based on their participation with the material. They will also be assessed on the quiz by being able to identify the proper nouns.

Differentiation:

For those students who may need additional help, provide them with more examples of proper nouns and discuss them how to correctly write them.

Plenary:

To finish off the lesson, ask the students to name one or two proper nouns they have learned in class and discuss the differences between the ways in which they are written.
