Introduction:

Today we’ll be looking at ‘proper nouns’. A proper noun is simply a name, usually the name of a person, place or organization.

Let’s start by reading through this description of a proper noun together:

(Read the definition of a proper noun from this resource: https://kidskonnect.com/language/proper-nouns/)

Lesson Outline:

  1. Explain what a proper noun is and how to use it.

  2. Review categories of proper nouns.

  3. Liaise with students to brainstorm some examples of proper nouns.

  4. Introduce some worksheets to practice proper noun recognition.

  5. Watch a video about proper nouns.

Questioning:

• What is a proper noun?

• Can you give me a couple of examples of proper nouns?

• What are the different categories of proper nouns?

• How do we use proper nouns in a sentence?

Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, students could complete a worksheet to assess their understanding of the different categories of proper nouns. This could be followed by a quiz to test their knowledge.

Differentiation:

Gifted and talented students can be asked to research a particular category of proper nouns further. For example, they could look at businesses that operate in the local area or detailed information about particular countries.

Meanwhile, students who require additional assistance could be provided with simplified worksheets or videos to help reinforce their understanding of proper nouns.

Plenary:

To round off the lesson, the students were asked to write a sentence containing two proper nouns.
