Introduction (5 minutes):

Begin the lesson by introducing the class to the concept of proper nouns. Explain that proper nouns refer to specific names of people, places and things, and that they each begin with a capital letter. Show the children some examples (e.g. “London”, “Professor Smith”, “Friday”).

Lesson Outline (25 minutes):

  1. Use the video resource ‘What are proper nouns?’ from Education.com to introduce the topic and demonstrate examples (https://www.education.com/video/what-are-proper-nouns/).

  2. Ask the children to think of some examples of proper nouns that they know (e.g. names of family, friends, places, countries etc.).

  3. Hand out the worksheet resource ‘Proper Nouns’ by Twinkl (https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/proper-nouns) and ask the children to complete the activities.

  4. Play a game to reinforce learning. Divide the children into two teams and ask them to come up with as many examples of proper nouns as they can within two minutes. The team with the most examples wins.

Questioning (5 minutes):

After completing the worksheet, ask the children to explain what they have learned about proper nouns (e.g. why do they have to be written with a capital letter in the correct context, what type of nouns do they refer to etc.). Invite the students to answer with their own examples.

Assessment (5 minutes):

Give the students a brief written quiz (e.g. matching proper nouns to the correct sentence context) or a verbal quiz to assess their understanding of the topic.

Differentiation (5 minutes):

For those who are struggling, provide them with simpler worksheets or activities, such as an alphabetical order exercise.

Plenary (5 minutes):

Revisit the learning by asking the class to produce some individual examples of proper nouns. Give out a reward for the best answer.
