Introduction
Welcome the students to the lesson. Explain the purpose of the lesson and what they will be learning. Provide an example of a proper noun and ask the students if they can give any examples.
Lesson Outline
-
Begin by setting the context of the lesson. Explain that proper nouns are special words that refer to specific people, places, companies and organizations. Allow the students to make their own example sentences using proper nouns.
-
Show the students examples of proper nouns (e.g. Aunt Mabel, London). Explain the difference between common and proper nouns.
-
Introduce the concept of capitalisation. Explain that the first letter of the word is always written with a capital letter (e.g. George, United Nations).
-
Ask the students to look at their workbooks or textbooks for examples of proper nouns. Ask them to circle the proper nouns in the text and write them down on a piece of paper.
-
Introduce the idea of proper nouns in titles (e.g. King John, Queen Elizabeth II). Ask the students to look for examples in their books again.
-
Finally, introduce the concept of geographical titles (e.g. River Thames, Mount Everest).
Questioning
Throughout the lesson, use questioning to check the students’ understanding. Ask follow-up questions to ensure the students are clear on the concept. End the lesson with a review of what has been discussed and ask the students to give examples of proper nouns.
Assessment
Assess the students’ understanding at the end of the lesson. Ask them to write an example sentence using a proper noun. Ask them to identify different types of proper nouns.
Differentiation
Ensure that the lesson is differentiated to meet the varying needs of the students. Provide extra support and guidance to weaker students as needed. Provide more challenging tasks for students who are more able.
Plenary
Provide a clear conclusion to the lesson. Summarise the main points of the lesson. Ask the students to summarise what they have learnt in their own words.
