Introduction: (Discuss with the class) Today we are going to be talking about Proper Nouns. Does anybody know what a proper noun is? (Allow students to answer). A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing. For example, “London” is the name of a place, so it is a proper noun, same as with “John” which is the name of a person, so it is a proper noun too.

Lesson Outline: 1. Show a video about proper nouns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwf_7W8adEg). 2. Introduce a worksheet (or the class can work together on the board) outlining some proper nouns and non-proper nouns. Here is an example (http://www.worksheetplace.com/index.php?function=DisplaySheet&sheet=20416). 3. Get the students to work in pairs and work through the worksheet, or they can work together as a class on the board. 4. Get the students to discuss and explain interesting facts about the proper nouns that they have identified, engaging the class in wider debate.

Questioning: - Lead a discussion on how the students can tell the difference between a proper noun and a non-proper noun - Ask the students for examples of both - Ask the class about any famous characters, people, places or things that they know

Assessment: At the end of the lesson, assess the knowledge of the students about proper nouns with a series of questions or a quiz.

Differentiation: Provide different material for pupils to work from depending on their abilities. For example, some can work from the worksheet while others can research or create interesting facts or stories relating to proper nouns.

Plenary: At the end of the class, have a brief discussion where the students can share what they have learnt during the lesson. Also, get the students to review the lesson by asking them to explain something they have learnt about proper nouns today.
