Objective: To be able to identify and use a proper noun

Introduction (5 minutes): Today we are going to be learning about proper nouns. A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing or idea. Videos are a great resource to help explain what a proper noun is and how to identify them. A good place to start is with this video:

Lesson Outline (15 minutes):

  1. Read through the definition of proper nouns with class
  2. Ask the children to think of examples of proper nouns from their own life
  3. Divide the children into groups of 4 and provide each group with some worksheets https://www.teachervision.com/grammar/proper-nouns-worksheet
  4. Give each group some time to go through the worksheets and encourage them to talk through their answers with one another

Discuss the answers to the worksheets as a class. Ask questions such as “Which nouns are proper nouns?” and “Can you think of any examples in our classroom?”

Ask the children to write down any examples of proper nouns that they have identified.

Differentiation (5 minutes):

For children who need extra help, provide additional resources tailored to the individual’s learning needs.
