Introduction

To begin the lesson, explain to the children what proper nouns are. A proper noun is the name of something specifically and it is always spelled with a capital letter, for example names of people, places or things such as John, London and Google. Explain to them why it is important to use a capital letter for proper nouns.

Lesson Outline

  • Explain what a proper noun is and why it is important to use it correctly
  • Give examples of some common proper nouns
  • Show students the worksheet resource(Worksheet #1) and get the students to identify proper nouns
  • Ask some questions of the students based on the worksheet such as “What is the first proper noun on the worksheet?” (John)
  • Introduce a game (Game #1) where students can practice using proper nouns by filling in the blanks with the right words
  • Introduce a video resource (Video #1) about proper nouns and get the students to watch it

  • Ask guiding questions to help the students understand what a proper noun is
  • Ask comprehension questions to assess the students’ understanding of proper nouns
  • Ask questions about the worksheet and game to assess the students’ understanding of the materials
  • Ask the students to give their own examples of proper nouns

  • Ask the students to complete the worksheet
  • Use the game to assess the students’ understanding of proper nouns

Differentiation

  • Offer modifications for the worksheet and game for children who are struggling
  • Offer more challenging tasks for children who have a strong understanding of the materials
