Introduction (5 Minutes): To introduce the concept of proper nouns, start off with a class discussion about what the students already understand about nouns in general. Connect this to proper nouns by explaining that some nouns represent specific people, places, and things. Use examples to explain why these are considered proper nouns. Show the students a picture of a famous place and a famous person to help them make the connection (e.g. the White House, Michael Jackson).

Lesson Outline (30 Minutes): 1. Introduce the slides on proper nouns. These can be found at the link below: https://www.teachstarter.com/au/teaching-resource/parts-of-speech-proper-nouns-280620/

  1. Have the students view the slides and answer any questions they may have.

  2. Have the students watch the following video on proper nouns to reinforce what they have learned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN_ByORZeMM

  3. Continue the lesson with a mini-lesson on using proper nouns in sentences. Discuss various types of proper nouns (person, place, thing). Have the students use their imagination and come up with proper nouns for each type (e.g. for people: Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé).

  4. Have the students practice by completing the worksheet “Proper Nouns” found at the link below: https://www.teachstarter.com/au/teaching-resource/proper-nouns-275928/

  5. Give the students time to complete the worksheet and then discuss their answers.

Questioning (5 Minutes): Throughout the lesson, use differentiated questioning to check in on the students’ understanding. Ask questions such as: - What is the difference between a regular noun and a proper noun? - Can you give some examples of proper nouns? - Can you give an example of a sentence with a proper noun in it?

Assessment (5 Minutes): At the end of the lesson, assess the students’ understanding of proper nouns. Have the students complete a written task or quiz to test their knowledge. You can also ask them to come up with sentences using proper nouns.

Differentiation (5 Minutes): For students who need extra help, provide them with additional worksheets or activities to help them understand the concept. Provide visual aids or diagrams that can help the students understand the concept better.

Plenary (5 Minutes): End the lesson by having the students orally summarize what they have learned about proper nouns. Ask them to answer questions such as: - What is a proper noun? - What are some examples of proper nouns? - How can you use proper nouns in sentences?

This will help you to assess their understanding of the lesson and determine if they need more instruction or practice.
