Introduction In this lesson, we will be discussing proper nouns; what they are, why they are important and how to use them correctly. Proper nouns name people, places, things, and events when we need to be specific. Examples of proper nouns are Madeleine, London, Eiffel Tower, and Black Friday.
Lesson Outline -What are proper nouns? (2 mins) -Why are proper nouns important? (5 mins) -How can we use proper nouns correctly? (15 mins) -Practice using proper nouns (30 mins) -Review proper nouns (10 mins)
Questioning -What is the difference between a proper noun and a common noun? -What are some types of proper nouns? -Can you give me an example of a proper noun in a sentence?
Assessment At the end of the lesson, students will be asked to identify the proper nouns in a short paragraph, circle the capitalized proper nouns in a text and write down a sentence using a proper noun they were recently introduced to.
Differentiation For students who may need additional support, materials will be provided in multiple formats (video, worksheet, etc.). During the practice part of the lesson, students can work in pairs or in small groups to practice using proper nouns.
Plenary To finish the lesson, students will be asked to create a poster with a definition of a proper noun and examples of proper nouns that have been discussed in the lesson.
