Introduction (5 minutes) Begin by going over the definition of a noun. Explain that a noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. Then, review the concept of a proper noun by using examples. Explain that a proper noun is a specific name for a person, place, or thing. Examples might include a person’s name, a place like London, a thing like a car, or an idea like democracy.
Lesson Outline (30 minutes)
• Discuss types of proper nouns and examples (10 minutes) -Person nouns (Byron) -Place nouns (England) -Thing nouns (the Eiffel Tower) -Idea nouns (capitalism)
• Identify proper nouns (10 minutes) Have the students work in groups to look through magazines or newspapers and find examples of proper nouns. Bring the group back together and have each group report their findings.
• Brainstorm list of proper nouns (10 minutes) Create a list on the board of nouns that students have provided. Have each student contribute at least one input and have them explain why it is a proper noun.
Questioning (5 minutes) Throughout the lesson, ask students questions in order to keep them engaged and to ensure that they are understanding the lesson. Questions could include:
• How can you tell if a noun is proper? • What is an example of a proper noun? • Are pronouns considered proper nouns?
Assessment (5 minutes) At the end of the lesson, give the students a worksheet with sentences that ask them to identify proper nouns. The worksheet can be found here:

Differentiation (5 minutes) Provide students with a choice between finding proper nouns in magazines or newspapers, or coming up with their own sentence with a proper noun in it. This provides students with an opportunity to practice proper nouns in different ways.
