Introduction: Today’s lesson will be about proper nouns. Our focus will be on what proper nouns are, how to identify them and how to use them in a sentence.
Lesson Outline:
• Introduce what proper nouns are using this resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2ZENKbs69M • Let the children practice using this worksheet: http://www.tlsbooks.com/propernoun.pdf • Ask questions to make sure the children fully understand what proper nouns are and how to identify them (e.g. What is a proper noun? Can you give me an example of a proper noun?) • Divide the students into small groups and have them complete this worksheet: http://www.tlsbooks.com/propernoun2.pdf • Ask the children to share their answers with the class • Allow the children to practice forming proper noun sentences (e.g. I like eating ice-cream from McDonald’s).
Assessment:
• Observe the students during the lesson to make sure they are understanding the material • Circulate the classroom to evaluate the students’ answers to the worksheets • Hold a discussion with the class to assess their comprehension
Differentiation:
• Provide the worksheet with fewer words and sentences to those children with slower reading and writing speeds • Provide additional worksheets and resources for advanced learners
Plenary:
• Ask the children to review what they have learned in the lesson • Have a discussion with the class about how proper nouns are used in conversation and in writing • Summarise the lesson by giving the children examples of proper nouns and ask them to identify which ones are proper nouns.
