Introduction:
Good morning! Today we are going to be learning about a very important grammar feature called “proper nouns”. You might have heard of this before. Can anyone tell me what a proper noun is? (Allow time for answers)
A proper noun is the name of a special person, place or thing. Let’s take a look at some examples.
Lesson Outline: 1. Discuss rules for making proper nouns. 2. Identify proper nouns within a text. 3. Create a proper noun poem.
Questions: a. What is a proper noun? b. What words typically make up a proper noun? c. What is an example of a proper noun? d. What rules should we follow when writing proper nouns?
Assessment:
At the conclusion of the lesson, demonstrate knowledge and understanding by passing out worksheets that include multiple fill-in-the-blank sentences. Students will have to identify the proper nouns in each sentence and fill in the blanks accordingly.
Differentiation:
Allow students to use online video resources to review proper nouns at their own pace. Provide more challenging worksheets for higher ability students.
Plenary:
Have each student create a proper noun poem, stating the names of persons, places, and things they think are special. Allow students to share their creations with the class.
