Introduction (5 minutes):

Start by explaining to the students what proper nouns are. Show the students examples of proper nouns, such as names of people, animals, places and titles. Explain that proper nouns are always written with a capital letter, even if they are at the start of a sentence.

Lesson Outline (25 minutes):

  1. Ask students to share examples of proper nouns and write them on the board.

  2. Show the students the “Proper Nouns Presentation” available here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Proper-Nouns-Powerpoint-Slides-Super-Engaging-2622069

  3. Introduce the “Proper Nouns Worksheet” available here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Second-Grade-Proper-Nouns-Worksheet-Super-Engaging-2731277

  4. Give the students time to complete the worksheet individually.

  5. Check in with each student to monitor understanding.

Questioning (15 minutes):

  1. Ask the students to share examples of proper nouns that they have written down.

  2. Ask the students questions about the rules for using proper nouns, such as why proper nouns always have a capital letter.

  3. Ask students to provide examples of proper nouns from their own lives.

Assessment (5 minutes):

Assess the students understanding of proper nouns by asking them to pick a name for a new character in a story and explain why their chosen name is a proper noun.

Differentiation (5 minutes):

Provide more difficult questions for more advanced students, such as asking them to identify proper nouns in a sentence.

Provide support to less advanced students by providing alternate forms of the lesson material, such as a simplified worksheet.

Plenary (5 minutes):

Show the students the “ABC Videos - Proper Nouns” available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq3s8JxGvfM

Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned and provide examples of how they will use proper nouns in their writing going forward.
