Introduction
Welcome children to the lesson! Explain why proper nouns are important for writing, for example: names of people and places. Ask the students to come up with a few examples. Have the students share the examples from their brainstorming session.
Lesson Outline
Explain the definition of a proper noun and provide some examples. To provide more clarity, watch the following video lesson on proper nouns (1):
Discuss the importance of capitalizing proper nouns. Then review some practice examples as a class. Have the students fill out the corresponding worksheet (2). As you go through the worksheet, discuss any examples that may be difficult or confusing. If a student needs additional help, provide one-on-one support.
Questioning
Ask the students to come up with some examples of proper nouns. Encourage them to share their answers and point out the correct ones. Ask questions to the class to ensure they understand when to use proper nouns.
Assessment
Once the students are done with the worksheet, have them share their answers with a partner or as a group. Have some volunteers write down the answers on the board for further review. Then, ask the students to write a short sentence about themselves, capitalize all the proper nouns correctly.
Differentiation More advanced students can be provided with a more challenging worksheet that includes different types of proper nouns. Students who need extra help can further review the video or receive extra support as they work.
Plenary
Ask the students to share what they learned from the lesson. Summarize their responses and reinforce the concept of proper nouns.
