Introduction:
Today, we’re going to talk about proper nouns. A proper noun is a type of noun, which names a particular person, place, thing, animal or idea. The first letter of a proper noun is always capitalised, like ‘Lucy’ or ‘London’. And did you know that the names of days and months are also proper nouns?
Outline:
- Explain what a proper noun is
- Examples of proper nouns and why the first letter is always capitalised
- Examples of days and months as proper nouns
- Activity figuring out which words are proper nouns and which are common nouns
- Classroom discussion
Questioning:
- What is a proper noun?
- Can you give me an example of a proper noun?
- What are examples of days and months that are proper nouns?
Assessment:
Students can demonstrate what they have learned by completing a worksheet (see below) where they are asked to identify which words are proper nouns and which are common nouns.
Differentiation:
To differentiate the lesson, the instructor can provide some higher-level students with additional examples of proper nouns and a few more difficult questions to answer.
Plenary:
To wrap-up the lesson students will then be asked to name some more examples of proper nouns as well as some words that are not proper nouns.
