Introduction
In this lesson, the students will learn about proper nouns and the rules which govern them. We will start by discussing the term ‘proper noun’ and what it means. Then, the students will work on activities to help them identify and understand why this type of noun is important in the English language.

- Distribute hand-out worksheets about proper nouns and discuss the content.

- Discuss some examples of proper nouns (social media, countries, cities, etc.)
- Introduce the worksheets and watch a video which explains the concept in more detail (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MChDEYu4e4g)
-
Allow the students to work on their worksheets independently. Questioning
- What are proper nouns?
- What do we use proper nouns to describe?
- Can you give me some examples of proper nouns?
- How do we know when to capitalize a proper noun?
Assessment
Once students have finished their worksheets, ask them to write down five sentences which use proper nouns correctly. Explain what they have done correctly and give examples of where they should have used proper nouns but failed to do so.
Differentiation
For students that need more support, use worksheets which have simpler questions. Give extra one-on-one assistance to those who need it. You can also provide colour-coded worksheets which will make it much easier for students to identify the proper nouns in the sentences.
Plenary
Ask each student to explain how to use proper nouns correctly and why it is important. Give out stickers or certificates for those that succeed in correctly completing the worksheet and in/in correctly using a proper noun.
