Introduction:

Hello everyone, my name is Ms. Jones and today I am going to be teaching you all about the basics of proper nouns. Can someone tell me what they think a proper noun is?

(Allow the students to brainstorm and discuss amongst themselves)

A proper noun is a specific name of a person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are always capitalized.

Lesson Outline:

[1] Definitions of proper nouns – Explain what a proper noun is, discuss its definition, and use examples to clearly illustrate the concept (5 minutes)

[2] Practice identifying proper nouns – Introduce a coloring worksheet that shows a variety of spelling scenarios; the children will have to identify which words are proper nouns and which are not (15 minutes)

[3] Practice using proper nouns correctly – Show a series of clips where people use proper nouns correctly, and discuss the examples using questions such as: “Why did the writer capitalize this word?” (10 minutes)

[4] Summarize the lesson – Recap the concepts the children have learned and discuss how they can use this new knowledge in their own writing (8 minutes)

Questioning:

To ensure student understanding, intersperse questioning throughout the lesson. This can include but is not limited to:

[1] What is a proper noun?

[2] What makes a proper noun different from other nouns?

[3] What are some examples of proper nouns?

[4] How can we tell which words should be capitalized and which should not?

[5] Why is it important to use proper nouns correctly?

Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, the students can complete a brief assessment to demonstrate understanding. This assessment can take the form of a quiz or an exit ticket. In the assessment, the students will have to identify proper nouns and explain why they should be capitalized.

Differentiation:

To best suit the needs of low-performing and high-performing students, differentiation can be utilized. For low-performing students, provide additional support with the practice materials. For high-performing students, provide more challenging questions or extensions to the material.

Plenary:

To encourage the use of proper nouns, have the students create their own sentences using them. Allow students to share with the class, and provide feedback and example sentences.
