Objective: Students will be able to identify and pronounce the names and sounds of letters I, J, K, and L. They will also practice writing and tracing these letters.

Materials: - Large print letters I, J, K, and L - Worksheets with rows of each letter - Pencils or crayons

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) - Display the large print letters I, J, K, and L on the board or a chart paper. - Ask the students if they know the names and sounds of these letters. - Explain that today, we will be learning the names and sounds of these letters.

  2. Letter Introduction (10 minutes) - Point to the letter I and say, “This is the letter I. Can you think of a word that starts with the letter I?” (e.g., igloo) - Have the students repeat the word “igloo” and the sound /i/ after you. - Repeat the process for the letters J (jacket), K (kangaroo), and L (lion). - Encourage the students to say the name and sound of each letter chorally and individually.

  3. Letter Writing Practice (15 minutes) - Distribute the worksheets with rows of each letter to the students. - Instruct the students to trace each letter with their pencil or crayon while saying the name and sound of the letter. - Circulate around the classroom, providing guidance and support as needed. - Encourage the students to practice writing each letter on their own after tracing.

  4. Review and Assessment (10 minutes) - Gather the students together and review the names and sounds of the letters I, J, K, and L. - Ask individual students to come to the front and point to a letter, then say its name and sound. - Provide positive feedback and reinforcement for correct answers.

  5. Conclusion (5 minutes) - Recap the lesson by asking the students to share one word that starts with each letter (I, J, K, L). - Remind the students to practice writing and saying the names and sounds of these letters at home. - Thank the students for their participation and effort.

Extension Activity: - Play a letter-sound matching game where students match pictures of objects starting with the letters I, J, K, and L to the corresponding letter cards. - Encourage students to create their own mini-books or flashcards with pictures and words starting with these letters.
