Title: Exploring Positions: In Front of and Behind

Grade Level: Primary 3 (ages 8-9)

Objective: - Students will be able to understand and use positional words such as “in front of” and “behind” to describe the position of a person in relation to another person. - Students will practice using these positional words through various engaging activities.

Materials: - Picture cards with images of people in different positions - Large chart paper or whiteboard - Markers - Construction paper - Scissors - Glue - Worksheets (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what the word “position” means. Discuss their responses and explain that position refers to the location or place of something or someone. - Show the students two picture cards, one with a person standing in front of another person and the other with a person standing behind another person. - Ask the students to describe the position of the person in each picture card. Encourage them to use words like “in front of” and “behind.” - Write these words on the chart paper or whiteboard.

  2. Teach the Concept (10 minutes): - Display the picture cards again and ask a volunteer to come to the front of the class. - Hold up one picture card and ask the volunteer to stand in the same position as shown in the picture. - Ask the class to describe the position of the volunteer using the words “in front of” or “behind.” - Repeat the process with the second picture card and another volunteer. - Reinforce the meaning of the words “in front of” and “behind” by providing additional examples using objects in the classroom.

  3. Group Activity: Positional Word Sort (15 minutes): - Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students. - Distribute a set of picture cards to each group. - Instruct the students to sort the picture cards into two groups: “in front of” and “behind.” - Encourage students to discuss their choices and explain their reasoning to their group members. - Monitor the groups and provide assistance as needed.

  4. Art Activity: Positional People Collage (15 minutes): - Give each student a sheet of construction paper, scissors, and glue. - Instruct the students to cut out pictures of people from magazines or draw their own people on the construction paper. - Ask the students to glue the people onto the construction paper, arranging them in different positions such as “in front of” and “behind.” - Encourage creativity and remind students to label the positions using the words “in front of” and “behind.”

  5. Conclusion and Assessment (10 minutes): - Gather the students back together as a whole class. - Review the meaning of the words “in front of” and “behind” by asking volunteers to demonstrate the positions using the collage artwork. - Ask individual students to come to the front and describe their position in relation to another student using the positional words. - Assess students’ understanding by observing their participation and ability to correctly use the positional words.

Optional Extension Activities: - Provide worksheets with pictures of people in different positions. Students can label the positions using “in front of” and “behind.” - Play a game of Simon Says, giving instructions using positional words for students to follow. - Read a story or book that includes characters in different positions. Discuss the positions using the words “in front of” and “behind.”
