Lesson Plan: Writing a Story Using a Story Map
Grade: Primary 3 (ages 7-8)
Starter: - Begin the lesson by showing the students a short video clip of a familiar story. Ask them to identify the main characters, setting, and events in the story.
Introduction: - Explain to the students that today they will be learning how to write a story using a story map. A story map is a visual tool that helps organize the elements of a story. - Show the students an example of a story map and explain each component (characters, setting, problem, events, and solution). - Discuss the importance of planning a story before writing it, as it helps to organize thoughts and ideas.
Cross-Curricular Link: - This lesson incorporates elements of English Language Arts (writing), as well as Visual Arts (creating a story map).
Differentiated Learning Objectives: 1. All students will be able to identify the main components of a story map. 2. Most students will be able to create a story map for a given story. 3. Some students will be able to write a complete story using a story map as a guide.
Differentiated Activities:
-
Activity 1: Identifying Story Map Components - Provide each student with a worksheet containing a story map template. - Show the students a short video clip of a different story and ask them to fill in the story map template with the main components. - Provide support to struggling students by discussing the story map components as a whole class.
-
Activity 2: Creating a Story Map - Divide the students into small groups. - Provide each group with a different story or a story prompt. - In their groups, students will create a story map for their assigned story or prompt. - Provide support to struggling students by providing sentence starters or visual aids.
-
Activity 3: Writing a Story Using a Story Map - Provide each student with a blank story map template. - Instruct the students to use their story map to write a complete story. - Encourage creativity and imagination while writing the story. - Provide support to struggling students by allowing them to work in pairs or providing sentence starters.
