Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to correctly use commas to create lists for written sentences.

Procedure:

  1. Begin by reading the book Comma Gets A Cure, by Ruth Heller (2-3 minutes)

  2. Explain to students the purpose of commas and how they are used to separate items in a list (3-5 minutes).

  3. Show students examples of correct comma usage in writing, from sentences written on the board (3-5 minutes).

  4. Divide students into pairs for practice (3-4 minutes).

  5. Distribute copies of a worksheet containing sentences that require commas to create lists (2-3 minutes). Have each pair complete the worksheet in class and discuss their answers (10-15 minutes).

  6. Provide additional instructional activities or resources, such as playing a game, watching a YouTube video, or completing another worksheet (10-15 minutes).

  7. Have students create their own sentences using commas to create lists (5-10 minutes).

  8. Ask a few students to share their sentences with the class (3-4 minutes).

  9. Conclude by reviewing lesson content and having students summarize what they learned (2-3 minutes).
