Introduction:

To begin today’s lesson, let’s review what we already know about 2D shapes. (Have students provide examples of 2D shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, etc.) Now we’re going to learn about 3D shapes, or shapes that have three dimensions.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Show students a few examples of 3D shapes such as cubes, pyramids, cylinders, and spheres. Introduce the concept of vertices, edges, and faces and explain what each of these terms mean.

  2. Have students use a simple worksheet to label the vertices, edges, and faces of various 3D shapes.

  3. Introduce the idea of symmetry in 3D shapes. Show students examples of various 3D shapes and how they each contain special kinds of symmetry or lack any symmetry.

  4. Ask the students to sort various 3D shapes into different categories. For example, students can sort shapes according to their appearance, number of faces, symmetry, etc.

Questioning:

Throughout the lesson, ask the students questions like:

-What are vertices, edges, and faces? -Can you give an example of a 3D shape? -How many faces does a cube have? -What is an example of a 3D shape with symmetry?

Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, assess the students’ understanding of 3D shapes by having them create 3D models of any shape of their choice.

Differentiation:

For those students who need additional help, provide physical objects such as blocks or cubes for them to explore and interact with. This will help them to understand the concept of 3D shapes more clearly.

For more advanced students, you can provide them with more challenging questions and activities such as having them identify the different parts of a more complicated shape.

Plenary:

To finish off the lesson, review what was learned and provide students with a few more examples of 3D shapes.
