Introduction Distributive property is an important concept in mathematics. It is a way of rewriting an expression. Primarily 6 students should be familiar with basic multiplication and should be able to understand how distributions can help simplify maths problems. This lesson plan will give an overview of the distributive property, explain how to use it and provide an assessment to test student understanding.

Lesson Outline

  1. Introduction to the Distributive Property (5-10 min) • Explain that the distributive property is a way of dividing multiplication into smaller groups to make it simpler • Use visual representations such as simple equations and diagrams to illustrate the distributive property • Watch Khan Academy video

  2. Practicing the Distributive Property (15-20 min) • Utilize worksheets to reinforce the concept • Break students off into groups to practice

  3. Applying the Distributive Property (10-15 min) • Provide the class with examples that demonstrate how to use the distributive property • Show students how the property can be used to simplify mathematics

Questioning • Focus on “why” questions to emphasize underlying concepts • Ask open-ended questions that draw out student’s critical thinking skills • Encourage students to explain their thought processes

Assessment • Create a quiz to evaluate student understanding • Give students scenarios and ask them to explain how they would use the distributive property to solve • Ask students to come up with their own examples

Differentiation • Give students with special needs extra time to process and understand the concepts • Allow students to practice in small groups

Plenary • Ask students to recall key points from the lesson • Reiterate the importance of understanding the distributive property • Show examples of how the distributive property is used in everyday life
