Lesson Plan: Narrative Writing for Primary 7
Introduction (10mins): The introduction of the lesson will focus on the purpose of narrative writing and the elements that make up a good narrative story. Begin by telling the story of The Three Little Pigs, followed by The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Ask the students which one was the most engaging story? (The Three Little Pigs) Address why that story was the most engaging (it had a good introduction, characters, setting, events, a problem to be solved, and a resolution).
Lesson Outline:
- Introduction to Narrative Writing (10mins)
- Model Writing Exercise (15mins)
- Group Brainstorming and Story Writing (20 mins)
- Editing and Final Draft (15mins)
For the second part, students will join you in a Model Writing Exercise. Demonstrate writing a brief narrative story, highlighting the different parts of the story (e.g. introduction, conflict, resolution). Choose a variety of topics to make it interesting for the class and give specific instructions for each part.
For the third part of the lesson, place the students in pairs or small groups and give them a story starter or situational prompt. Allow the students’ creativity to guide their decisions on the characters, setting, events, etc. Encourage the students to use detail and describing language while they brainstorm ideas.
In the fourth and final part of the lesson, have the students complete their stories and edit them for spelling and grammar mistakes. Have them read their stories out loud to their groups and have others’ feedback with what they enjoyed about the stories.
Questioning: Use open-ended questions to encourage creativity and get the students to explain their thinking. Questions to think about: -What did the characters look like? -What was the conflict in the story? -Was there a resolution? -How did the story or characters make the reader feel?
Assessment: Use a story rubric to assess the following: -Story elements (introduction, characters, setting, events, problem, resolution) -Quality of Writing (grammar, spelling, use of descriptive language) -Overall engagement (story length, plot, descriptive language)
Differentiation: For more advanced students, have them write an extended narrative story (<1000 words). Students not completing the extended story can complete the same assignment but they should aim to make their story more creative and engaging.
Plenary: Continue to encourage best practice in descriptive language, dialogue, storytelling etc. Ask some groups to present their stories to the whole class and reward the most creative and engaging stories.
