Lesson Plan: Outdoor Activities Connected to Flowers

Grade Level: Primary School (1st-3rd grade)

Subject: Science

Duration: 60 minutes

Learning Objectives: 1. Identify different types of flowers and their characteristics. 2. Understand the importance of flowers in the ecosystem. 3. Engage in outdoor activities related to flowers.

Materials: - Flower identification charts or books - Magnifying glasses - Colored pencils or markers - Worksheets (see resources below) - Video resources (see links below) - Outdoor space with a variety of flowers

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by showing pictures of different flowers and asking students if they can name any of them. 2. Discuss the importance of flowers in our daily lives, such as providing food (fruits and vegetables), attracting pollinators, and adding beauty to our surroundings. 3. Explain that today, they will be exploring the outdoor space to learn more about flowers and engage in fun activities related to them.

Lesson Outline: 1. Flower Identification (15 minutes): a. Take the students to the outdoor space and distribute flower identification charts or books. b. In pairs or small groups, encourage students to observe and identify different types of flowers using the charts or books. c. Provide magnifying glasses to help students examine the flowers closely and notice their unique features. d. Circulate among the groups, asking questions about the flowers they have found and guiding their observations.

  1. Flower Drawing (15 minutes): a. Give each student a worksheet with a blank flower template. b. Instruct students to choose a flower they found during the identification activity and draw it in the center of the template. c. Encourage students to use colored pencils or markers to add details and make their drawings vibrant. d. Walk around the outdoor space, providing assistance and asking questions about their chosen flowers (e.g., “What colors do you see in the petals?”).

  2. Flower Scavenger Hunt (15 minutes): a. Explain that students will participate in a flower scavenger hunt to find specific types of flowers. b. Provide a list of flower characteristics or specific flowers for students to find (e.g., a flower with five petals, a red flower, a flower with a strong fragrance). c. Allow students to explore the outdoor space, searching for the flowers on the list. d. Encourage students to discuss their findings with their peers and share interesting facts about the flowers they discovered.

Questioning and Assessment: 1. Throughout the lesson, ask open-ended questions to assess students’ understanding and engagement. Examples include: - What do you notice about the petals of this flower? - Why do you think flowers are important for bees and butterflies? - Can you name any other plants that produce flowers?

  1. Assess students’ learning through their participation in the activities, their ability to identify and describe different flowers, and their completion of the flower drawing worksheet.

Differentiation: 1. For students who need additional support, provide simplified flower identification charts or books with fewer options. 2. Pair students with different abilities together during the flower identification activity to encourage peer learning and support. 3. Offer extra guidance and assistance to students who may struggle with drawing or identifying flowers.

Plenary (5 minutes): 1. Gather the students together and ask them to share one interesting thing they learned about flowers during the lesson. 2. Recap the importance of flowers in the ecosystem and how they contribute to our daily lives. 3. Encourage students to continue exploring and appreciating flowers in their surroundings.
