Lesson Plan: The Long “i” Sound

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson. 2. Show the students a picture of a kite and ask if they know what sound the word “kite” starts with. 3. Introduce the concept of the long “i” sound and explain that it can be spelled in different ways. 4. Share the learning objectives with the students.
Lesson Outline: 1. Warm-up Game: “I Spy” (10 minutes) - Explain the rules of the game “I Spy” to the students. - Choose a student to start and have them say, “I spy with my little eye, something that makes the long ‘i’ sound.” - Other students take turns guessing objects that make the long “i” sound until someone guesses correctly. - Repeat the game with different students leading.
- Questioning (5 minutes)
- Display a list of long “i” words on the whiteboard or chart paper.
- Ask the students questions about the words to assess their prior knowledge.
- Examples: “Can you think of any other words that have the long ‘i’ sound?” “Can you think of any words that rhyme with ‘bike’?”
- Explicit Teaching (15 minutes)
- Introduce the different spelling patterns that create the long “i” sound (e.g., i-e, igh, y).
- Write examples of words with each spelling pattern on the whiteboard.
