Lesson Plan: Reception Maths

Objective: - Students will be able to use a number line to count on and back. - Students will be able to find one more or one less than a number from 1 to ten.

Materials: - Large number line (0-10) displayed in the classroom - Small number lines (0-10) for each student - Counters or small objects for each student - Worksheets with number line activities

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Gather the students in a circle and show them the large number line displayed in the classroom. 2. Ask the students if they know what a number line is and how it can be used. 3. Explain that a number line is a tool that helps us count and find numbers in order. 4. Demonstrate how to count on and back using the number line, starting from different numbers.

Activity 1: Counting On (10 minutes): 1. Distribute small number lines and counters to each student. 2. Instruct the students to place the counter on number 1 on their number line. 3. Ask the students to count on from 1 to 5, using their number lines to help them. 4. Encourage the students to move the counter along the number line as they count. 5. Repeat the activity, counting on from different starting numbers (e.g., 3, 7).

Activity 2: Counting Back (10 minutes): 1. Ask the students to place the counter on number 10 on their number line. 2. Instruct the students to count back from 10 to 6, using their number lines. 3. Encourage the students to move the counter along the number line as they count. 4. Repeat the activity, counting back from different starting numbers (e.g., 8, 4).

Activity 3: Finding One More or One Less (15 minutes): 1. Distribute worksheets with number line activities to each student. 2. Explain that the students will be finding one more or one less than a given number. 3. Instruct the students to complete the activities on their worksheets, using their number lines to help them. 4. Circulate around the classroom, providing assistance and guidance as needed.

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Gather the students back in a circle and review what they have learned. 2. Ask the students to share any challenges they faced and how they overcame them. 3. Summarize the importance of using a number line to count on and back, and to find one more or one less than a number. 4. Encourage the students to practice using number lines at home and in future math activities.
