Introduction (5 minutes): Start with an overview of what is Visual Elements. Explain that Visual elements are the visual components and techniques used to create meaningful images and illustrations. Introduce tools and techniques like composition, colour and perspective which will be used to discuss the importance of these elements.
Lesson Outline (15-20 minutes): Provide a brief introduction to art and the field of design. Show examples of work driven by visuals. Explain the use of the elements of creativity and design, such as colour, shape, line and space. Provide examples of how different colours and patterns can be used in various combinations to create interesting visuals. Introduce the concept of layering, how images and textures can be combined in different ways to create a unique and distinct look.
Questioning (10-15 minutes): Encourage students to discuss their own creative process by asking open-ended questions such as: • What type of visual elements do you use in your work? • How do you create depth and texture to create interest in a composition? • How does the use of colour, texture and patterns affect the overall look and feel of a design? • What other elements do you use to enhance the visual appeal of a design?
Assessment (5-10 minutes): Encourage students to create and their own designs using the visual elements discussed in the lesson. Ask students to present their work to the rest of the class and discuss the elements used and why. Assess the student’s work based on the quality of work and their understanding of the visual elements.
Differentiation & Plenary (10 minutes): Differentiation should be provided by allowing different groups of students to focus on specific elements. Provide worksheets or online resources that can be used to help students understand the visual elements. Use a plenary to wrap the lesson up. Show a video on the importance of visual elements in art and design. To summarize, ask students to come up with a short phrase or statement that demonstrates their understanding of the lesson.
